TED, and the Confession of an Information Junkie

Here’s a confession. I, Linda Miller-Zellner, am an information junkie. I love learning. I love taking seminars, going to conferences and reading about just about anything. My natural curiosity takes over and away I go exploring some new idea.

So while my long-suffering staff keeps my need for more in check, I’m free to gather more! I recently read an article in an in-flight magazine (on my way to another conference) that vindicated my info jones.

The article was about TED, an organization devoted to “Ideas Worth Spreading.” It started in 1984 and has morphed into a worldwide movement to explore any idea someone has – from green energy to global social issues to culture to the movies. TED’s been likened “to the curious what Dean & Deluca is to food” – and that’s the perfect description.

Why is this important to us, and by extension, our clients? Because, as one attendee of a recent TED conference said, “It’s like drinking from a fire hydrant. Good stuff keeps coming at you, and it sticks deep in your psyche.”

The information I gather with my junkie’s longing sticks with me – sometimes top of mind, sometimes deep within. When I share it, it may stick with another person, too. Bottom line, keeping the information flowing means my brain’s making new, better and sometimes brilliant connections. With those connections I’m able to magically transform my clients’ businesses. And that can’t be bad.

  1. OMG, I loved this piece. I love discovery and learning and I believe as business owners if we are not always looking for opportunities to innovate our businesses suffer. This morning I attended a presentation all about innovation and swimming outside of the fish bowl. It confirmed that us info junkies are on the right path.

    Good stuff

  2. Love TED. Love your post.

GOING to the TED conference – the holy grail for the info junkie. Let’s make it a goal to attend the next TED annual event!

Its a must resource to feed the soul of those of us on a mission to lead inspired and inspiring lives.

    Thanks!

  3. I’m the same way. Often the information I gather rejuvenates, inspires and transforms me … as long as it’s doing that, keep it up, right? Love to you Linda!

  4. Hi Linda,

LOVE this post! Constantly learning and growing is the best way we can contribute not just to our families and businesses, but to the Universe overall!

The challenge is to keep growing and learning while implementing to move forward.

Adding “attend TED conference” to my “Happy List”. 🙂

    Thanks for sharing!

    Sandy 🙂
