Polar Plunge!
We walk our talk at Hamptons Creative Group about giving back to the community, especially during the chill of winter. We took the Seventh Annual Polar Bear Plunge at Coopers Beach (named the best beach in America this year) on Saturday. It’s a benefit for Human Resources of the Hamptons, a Southampton charity that provides food, clothing and holiday presents to the less fortunate.
Polar Bear Plunge, you say?
For my land locked, water deprived friends, a polar bear plunge is when crazy people jump into the ocean in winter time. Many do it on New Year’s Day as a way to kick start the new year. Others, like me, do it to show our support for local non-profit groups who support our communities. And like the old Russian proverb says,
“He who helps a friend in woe is like a fur coat in the snow.”
Or an umbrella in the rain. Or a wet suit in December. What better way to help those in need than throwing myself in the freezing water! What? Ice on the Peconic Bay and I’m jumping in the ocean?! Oh yeah, that’s where the wet suit came in. Unlike many of the braver plungers who went in attired only in bathing suits. In typical Linda fashionista mode, I went for the “layered” rubber look. My hula skirt will never be the same, but the pearls held up, even through the waves!
The event was great fun for a great cause, and I’m already thinking about next year’s themed costume. Maybe an actual polar bear? I’m also thinking about the plunge as something that boosted my energy to push forward into the New Year – a lovely release that shifts focus for Hamptons Creative Group’s new direction. The imagery is a dog shaking off the water, with glee, after emerging from the ocean – a shaking and shimmering bundle of energy.
